Skipping out of Munich just before Oktoberfest kicked off has proved a double-bonus.

Strike Up the Band! (Almabtrieb Festival, Lechaschau, Austria)

We’ve missed being caught up in hordes of beer-swilling visitors overrunning the city, and stumbled upon a “county fair” version of the homage to that hoppy beverage. The Almabtrieb held just across the river Lech from our hotel in Reutte celebrates the return of the sheep and cows from their summer pastures up in the mountains.

Cross-Country Days in Germany and Austria

(Join Tales Told From The Road continues on its month-long virtual European journey.)

After picking up a rental car at the Munich train station, we’ll drive south and in less than two hours arrive in Reutte, a small town just across the Germany-Austria border that will serve as our base for exploring far southern Bavaria and the Austrian Tirol region.

After a quick loop trip through the nearby mountains during the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a fine dinner at our hotel on the outskirts of Reutte.

After breakfast the next morning, we’ll head north back in Germany to check out one of the “must see” sightseeing stops in Southern Bavaria, the twin Wittlesbach castles, Hohenschwangau, and Neuschwanstein, near Füssen, about a forty-five minute drive from where we are staying in Reutte.

Oktoberfest in Munich is a festival honoring beer, but the name is misleading: It actually begins in late September (this year, on Saturday, the 20th) and extends into October.

Traditional Garb CollageIn order to avoid being swept away in a sea of hoppy suds and millions of lederhosen and dirndl clad visitors, we’ve timed our arrival in and departure from Munich just before the annual beer blast.

But don’t worry. We’ll find plenty of beer and good food during our stay in Munich, and enjoy a much smaller Oktoberfest-fete, complete with beer tent, wurst, and oom-pah music, at the next stop on our month-long trip across Europe.
