“Cuba, Libre?” Documentary Vies for Another Film Award

Cuba, Libre?” has been selected to compete in the Impact DOCS Awards.

The documentary was released in January of 2016. Here’s the film’s trailer:

The film’s opening title tag line, “Will Americans Ever Again Travel Freely to Cuba?,” makes the documentary even more relevant to viewers now that the Trump Administration has followed through on its promise made last summer to retreat from the steps taken by President Obama to have a closer relationship between the U.S. and Cuba, including barring Americans from traveling to the island nation as individuals not part of a group tour.

“Cuba, Libre?” Wins Film Award, Nominated for Best Documentary

Cuba, Libre?, the Tales Told From The Road feature-length documentary about travel to Cuba by Americans from the early decades of the 20th century to the present day, has just received a Platinum Award in the 2017 Oregon International Film Awards Documentary Feature Competition.

Work on the film began in May of 2015 and was completed in January of 2016. Since then it has aired on over thirty public access television stations in the U.S. and has had several public and private screenings in the San Francisco Bay Area and Eugene, Oregon.

The first half of the film, “Voices of The Past,” is comprised of archival film footage showing what a glamorous tropical tourist destination Cuba was prior to the revolution led by Fidel Castro which deposed the president who had a favorable relationship with the United States and installed a Communist government allied with the U.S. Cold War nemesis, the Soviet Union.

The second half of the film, “Voices of The Present,” looks at Cuba of the post-Soviet era when the island nation turned to tourism to to bolster its economy of the collapse of its benefactor, the U.S.S.R.

Cuba, Libre? was shown at the Visual Radio Network Festival held in Oakland, California in April of 2016.

Cuba, Libre? received an Honorable Mention at the 2016 SaMo Indie Fest film festival in Santa Monica, California.

It has also just been named an Official Selection of the Barcelona Planet Film Festival and nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film.
