Happy New Year From The Times Square Ball!

Except for two years during World War II, every year since 1904 throngs gathering in New York City’s Time Square on New Year’s Eve have seen a lighted ball fall toward the earth at midnight to mark the beginning of another year as the event is broadcast via TV to millions across the planet.

But how and why did that “falling ball” tradition start, how has it changed over the years, and how did “Times Square” get its name?
