Last week in “Central Park: The Big Apple’s Backyard” we looked at how that big green open space defines New Yorkers’ “play space.”

But what objects define the city itself?

The New-York Historical Society has attempted to answer that question by assembling 101 bits and bobs of “The Big Apple” into an exhibition entitled “A Brief History of New York: Selections from A History of New York in 101 Objects.” This video and the accompanying article from The New York Times reviews the exhibit.

Can’t make it to New York before the exhibition ends on November 30, 2014? There’s a big fan of New York City on your holiday gift list?

There’s no need to travel the biggest city in America, just buy A Brief History of New York: Selections from A History of New York in 101 Objects from the New-York Historical Society ($30, $27 for members).
